Responsibilities

Altec has an exciting opportunity for a Product Development Engineer on the Altec Worldwide Engineering Team. The engineer will support inside and outside sales managers, end-users, customers and distributors outside of the United States and Canada. Position would be domiciled at the Roanoke, VA Altec facility in the US.

Altec specializes in the manufacture, sale and service of aerial devices, digger derricks, cranes and specialty equipment for the electric utility, telecommunications, tree care, construction, and light and sign maintenance industries in more than 120 countries throughout the world.

  • Work with multiple teams both within the location, across the company and overseas.
  • Enhance your technical skills in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
  • Contribute in a variety of areas focused on installation of Altec equipment on Non-US chassis overseas.
  • Have a hands-on approach to solving problems and continuous improvement.
  • Work on many different product lines at Altec. (Aerials, Digger and Cranes).

 

Responsibilities – Product Development Engineer

  • Generates 3D and 2D computer modeled drawings for use during fabrication and assembly of the product.
  • Design, modify, and/or apply components and systems using prudent engineering methods and techniques to meet specified technical objectives on time.
  • Analyze and solve complex product design, application, manufacturing, installation, and service problems.
  • Create unique original product designs which may be patentable.
  • Develop and execute experiments to validate and qualify new design solutions.
  • Direct other engineers and technical support personnel to carry out specific design tasks.
  • Analyze competitive product designs and report findings.
  • Communicates directly with Customers and Suppliers on issues of technical specifications, product design and product performance as needed.
  • Implement defect prevention procedures or processes in product design or application.
  • Support quality improvements in all facets of the company's business.
  • Collaborate with various teams within the organization to solve technical problems and identify improvement opportunities.
  • May travel to distributor location overseas to support final assembly installation. Typically, two weeks duration maximum.

 

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • ABET EAC certified bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a Master’s degree in Engineering
  • Internal candidates - Minimum of four (4) years’ Altec experience, 2 of which must be after earning the Degree in Engineering
    • Applicable Masters counts as one year of experience 
  • External candidates - Minimum four (4) years’ experience in an engineering role after earning the Degree in Engineering
    • Applicable Masters counts as one year of experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to work with team members and work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated thorough understanding and ability in basic engineering practices and principles.
  • Must effectively interact with other associates, departments, operations, distributors, vendors, customers, etc.
  • Basic understanding of business principles and practice
  • Must be confident, dynamic, and successful in working as part of a team
  • Must be willing to travel 0 - 10% of the time, potentially on short notice, which may include flying

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 - 4 years – Designing and testing products within a product development team

                  OR

  • Minimum of 5-10 years min working as a technical expert in an engineering discipline related field
  • Additional language skills preferred. Example Spanish, Chinese, Russian, etc.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in hydraulics and hydraulic control systems
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks and Finite Element Analysis
