Altec is hiring an Internet of Things (IoT) Systems Engineer. This position will support development activities within the connected product and telematics team. The Altec associate will have the opportunity to perform innovative problem solving in a true product development and service environment. This role will interface with product engineering, developer teams, manufacturing and applications engineering, production supervisors, management, suppliers, controls engineering, data scientists, marketing, account managers and customers.

Job Functions / Responsibilities

  • Design, create, and test innovative IoT solutions to serve the needs of internal and external customers for a variety of use cases
  • Manage and monitor IoT devices in the field
  • Translate customer voice into technical solutions
  • Perform pre-project planning and business case development
  • Identify dependencies between projects and other systems
  • Support coordination of digital product teams and physical product teams to create consistent business goals based on internal and external customer needs
  • Communicate effectively with business and internal teams to deliver product's functional requirements
  • Develop prototypes of new systems and interfaces which will be used to validate value to customers before production versions are developed
  • Prepare accurate and detailed requirement specifications documents, user interface guides, and functional specification documents
  • Perform end-to-end system testing of IoT systems and new functionality within those systems
  • Validate data collected through analysis, user acceptance testing, and voice of customer feedback
  • Train and educate other Altec associates on a variety of topics related to IoT systems and data analytics
  • Detect and investigate data quality issues
  • Connect subject matter experts with data scientists to help interpret telematics data

  • ABET EAC certified Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a Master’s Degree in Engineering
  • Internal candidates - Minimum of two (2) years' Altec full-time experience
    • Applicable Masters counts as one year of experience 
    • Coop, Intern, Temp experience does not count towards the requirements
  • External candidates - Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in an engineering role after earning the Degree in Engineering
  • Applicable Masters counts as one year of experience 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be able to work with team members and work with minimal supervision
  • Must be willing to travel up to 25% of the time, potentially on short notice, which may include flying
  • Demonstrated thorough understanding and ability in basic engineering practices and principles
  • Must effectively interact with other associates, departments, operations, distributors, vendors, customers, etc
  • Basic understanding of business principles and practice
  • Must be confident, dynamic, and successful in working as part of a team
  • Current valid Driver's License

  • Strong ability to interact with multiple teams and coordinate efforts across teams
  • Ability to manage costs, time, and resources
  • Competence in the use of personal computer software such as word processing, database, presentations, and spreadsheets.
  • Experience with new product creation

  • Experience with software quality and testing
  • Experience with relational database languages such as MySQL or SQL
  • Experience with languages used in web development such as Python, Java, JavaScript and Angular.

  • Business intelligence applications such as Power BI, Qlik or Tableau
  • Version control tools such as git, mercurial or subversion
  • Docker

  • Cloud computing providers such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and Digital Ocean.
  • Software architecture
  • Monitoring tools such as Elastic, Logstash, Kibana and Splunk
  • Familiarity with Agile project management
  • Familiarity with Altec PCP process

Helpful Skills

  • Embedded and Real Time Operating systems
  • Electro-hydraulic control systems
  • Experience with Matlab Simulink
  • Experience with languages used in embedded development such as C and C++
  • Network and RF transmission concepts
  • CAN digital communication protocol
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with AWS IoT Core, RDS, ECS.
  • Familiarity with big data streaming, architectures using Flink, Spark or Kafka
