An exciting opportunity is available for a Principal Engineering Manager position. Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, the position will serve in a leadership capacity within Altec Engineering. This role includes direct managerial responsibility for multiple teams. The most preferable location for the position is St Joseph, MO. Other locations may be considered for the ideal candidate, including Mt Airy, NC; Creedmoor, NC; Elizabethtown, KY; Roanoke, VA; or Duluth, MN.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (examples of work performed)

  • Strategy development, implementation, and accountability crossing multiple locations, Operations, and Teams.
  • Plans and directs engineering research, development, and design for large projects characterized by the highest degree of complexity.
  • Provides leadership in the delivery of complex products with effective delivery requiring project team efforts across multifunctional areas.
  • Assesses the underlying technical and process risks of a major product or technology and develops appropriate solutions.
  • Evaluates engineering site processes and procedures and makes modifications as appropriate to assure consistency with state-of-the art engineering practices.
  • Oversees creation, development, proof, and implementation of innovative engineering solutions, consistent with appropriate engineering practices to advance Altec’s superiority in all markets Altec serves.


Assumes Professional Engineering (technical) responsibility for

  • Technical integrity for multiple major projects or products
  • Training of Engineers
  • Practices professional Engineering and utilizes extensive engineering experience to add to the overall effectiveness of technical resource utilization and strategy.
  • Participates in continuous improvement of the Altec Technical Processes
  • Lead technical associates as a hands-on leader of the project design effort
  • Provides key exceptional technical input to Altec technical efforts.


Assumes Management responsibility for

  • Engineering, business, and technical integrity for multiple major projects or products
  • Project initiation, establishment of project objectives, formulation of Project or Design Teams including selection of Project Leader
  • Tracking and verifying milestones and objectives of projects
  • Training of Engineers, Supervisors, and Managers
  • Leads project teams or lead projects in significant functional elements of Altec products
  • Coordinates the total project effort including resource and manpower management
  • Develops, establishes, and encourages a participative attitude within the project or support teams


Bachelor’s Degree in engineering required. Advanced Degree preferred

Minimum of at least ten years of experience in Engineering, including at least 5 years of experience in Supervision/Management of Engineers

Demonstrated high level technical expertise as evidenced through the successful completion of the most complex engineering assignments.

Professional Engineer (PE) licensure strongly preferred

Exceptional analytical, written, verbal and organizational skills.

A thorough understanding of Altec’s business.

Demonstrated experience as a self-starter and ability to work independently on assignments anticipating a great deal of latitude in decision-making.
